Description

Research software is essential to modern science but remains fragile and often lacks proper recognition. The FAIRCORE4EOSC project addresses this by developing tools and services to make research software FAIR—Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.

Central to this effort is the integration of Software Heritage, the universal archive of source code, with key components of the scholarly ecosystem, including repositories (e.g., Zenodo, DANS), publishers (e.g., Dagstuhl, Episciences), and aggregators (e.g., OpenAIRE, swMath). Using standards like CodeMeta and persistent identifiers such as SWHIDs, FAIRCORE4EOSC improves software metadata, discoverability, and citation.

The project’s Research Software APIs and Connectors (RSAC) component enables seamless interoperability between infrastructures. In addition, a mirror of the Software Heritage archive will be deployed in Greece, ensuring distributed preservation and long-term access.

These actions implement key recommendations from the European Commission’s 2021 Scholarly Infrastructures for Research Software (SIRS) report, which called for including software alongside publications and data as a first-class research output.

We invite the community to contribute to the Software Metadata Curation Roadmap, share their journeys in research software, and engage in building a sustainable, community-driven infrastructure within the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).
