Description

Solar Orbiter HET/BGO single-counter data - short summary

The HET/BGO single-detector counts used here are obtained from Solar Orbiter EPD Level-1 EPT-HET single-counter CDF products. The relevant archive sources are the UAH EPD Data Portal and ESA SOAR:

- UAH EPD Data Portal: https://espada.uah.es/epd/data/
- UAH EPD API: https://espada.uah.es/epd/data/api
- ESA SOAR: https://soar.esac.esa.int/soar/

Use epthet1-sc for the EPT-HET1 ecliptic unit, covering the Sun and anti-Sun directions. Use epthet2-sc for the EPT-HET2 polar unit, covering the south and north directions. Level-2 HET products are not needed for this single-counter data product.

The derived file SOLO_HET-Single-Counter.txt contains time-binned HET/BGO single-detector counts. Its columns are:

year month day hour minutes seconds ACC_TIME C1H C2H C1L C2L

The timestamp columns identify the beginning of each output bin. ACC_TIME gives the actual accumulated seconds used for the counts in that row. C1H, C2H, C1L, and C2L are the selected counter variables; H and L denote high- and low-threshold channels.

The file can be regenerated with generate_solo_het_single_counter.py. By default the script writes 60-second count bins from epthet1-sc. The --acc-time option selects another output accumulation time in seconds; counts are summed into those bins and ACC_TIME stores the summed accumulation seconds. With --rates, the script writes counts divided by ACC_TIME instead of raw counts.

Technical info

The HET GCR trigger is a simplified Level-3 trigger designed to measure rare, high-energy galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) protons while maximizing the HET field of view. Unlike the nominal penetrating trigger, it primarily uses the two B detectors and the C scintillator detector, allowing it to accept particles entering through the thin aluminum housing rather than exclusively through the telescope aperture.

A valid GCR event requires a suitable coincidence in the B detectors, calibration of the SSD and C signals, selection of the detector segments with the maximum energy deposition, an anti-coincidence check using the B guard segments, and a consistency check between the smaller B-detector signal and the C detector signal to reject fragmentation-like events. Accepted events are accumulated in a one-dimensional histogram of the energy deposited in the C detector.

The nominal GCR proton product consists of two channels. Channel 0 contains events with energy deposits in the C detector ranging from ~ 30 to 56 MeV, corresponding to proton energies starting at approximately 150 MeV. The energy range extends to relativistic, minimum-ionizing particles, which are counted in Channel 1 and produce energy deposits between 15 and 30 MeV in the C detector. The transition between Channel 0 and Channel 1 is relatively sharp and occurs at approximately 350 MeV. Contributions from other particle species are only marginal in both channels, as demonstrated by the derived response functions shown at https://zenodo.org/records/20008605. Additional information can be found in the accompanying PDF and in the PhD thesis available at https://macau.uni-kiel.de/servlets/MCRFileNodeServlet/macau_derivate_00001639/elftmann_robert_phd.pdf.

The HET GCR trigger data are ready for use as provided. However, consultation with the instrument team is recommended and appreciated.

Data files for Units 1 and 2 contain the following columns:

  • Date
  • Flags
  • Ch0 [counts]
  • Ch1 [counts]
