Description

This data repository provides 6-hourly time profiles for the 13 ultrarelativistic solar energetic electron events identified in Ulysses/KET observations from 1990–2008. The event selection follows the methodology described in the accompanying paper by Jöhnk et.al. :

"Ultrarelativistic SEP electron events measured by the Ulysses Kiel Electron Telescope"

Candidate solar energetic electron events were detected from significant count-rate increases in multiple KET electron sub-channels, screened against Jovian electron enhancements using proton channels, and assigned onset times using higher time-resolution HET electron data.

For each event, the repository contains fluxes sampled at 6-hour intervals for the E12 channel in discrete C2 PHA bins, starting three days before and ending 10 days after the reported event period. The C2 PHA data bins are: [20, 40, 60, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, 150, 160, 170, 185, 200]

For each bin, the effective energy in [MeV] as derived by the iterative Bow-Tie method as well as the flux and error of flux in [1/(cm^2 sr MeV s)] are provided. Time intervals that did not allow to apply the Bow-Tie method e.g. due to low statistics and thus yielding no effective energys of PHA bins and fluxes are set to -999

These time profiles are intended to support reproducible analysis of the temporal evolution of the events and provide the observational basis for deriving background-corrected count rates, energy spectra, and maximum electron energies using the GEANT4 response functions and iterative Bow Tie method described in the paper. The dataset therefore complements the publication by making the event-resolved time series available in a uniform format for comparison, reanalysis, and future SEP electron studies.

*Note that depending on the event strength, different time intervals may improve the accuracy of the calculated effective energys and fluxes. To enable the interested user to follow the methodolgy and apply it to his needs, the PHA resolved response functions for the C2 detector in the E12 channel are provided in addition.
