Description

These datasets consist of native resolution conductivity, temperature, and pressure derived from CT* series instruments deployed by the National Science Foundation's Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) (https://oceanobservatories.org/) between April 2014 and August 2026. Glider and rosette cast data are not provided in this repository. It is strongly encouraged that the GliderDAC be used to access OOI glider datasets (https://gliders.ioos.us/)

Not all datasets may contain pressure data and some pressure values represent the nominal deployment depth (which is the case CT instruments attached to SBD nodes). Poor quality data identified through the QARTOD primary tests and human-in-the-loop annotations have been removed. These data still retain some spikes, steps, and trends, so some advanced filtering may be required. The GSW package has been used to recalculate sea_water_practical_salinity, sea_water_density, and sea_water_potential density for each deployment. These data are intended to be used for temperature-salinity corrections for other products or the identification of profiles. For example, these data have been used to support temperature-salinity correction for the NSF-OOI Attenuation/Absorption Datasets and the subsetting of upward profiles in the NSF-OOI Fluorometer Datasets.

Zip directories are oriented by the OOI subsite. e.g. CE02SHSM-CT contains all deployments of CT instruments deployed on the Coastal Endurance Oregon Shelf Mooring at all depths.

Individual files are titled using the full OOI reference designator, the deployment number, the first and last day containing data in the file, and the file version number.

e.g. CE02SHSM-RID27-03-CTDBPC000_D0002_20151007-20160516_V1.0.nc contains CTD data from Deployment 2 for the CTD located at 7M depth on the Coastal Endurance Oregon Shelf Surface Mooring.

NOTE ON SURFACE MOORINGS: Many surface moorings have a CT instrument deployed at ~1m depth. These datasets are hidden within the METBKA001 datasets in OOI GoldCopy record. This data can be identified in this repository as METBKA0001-CT, which is not an OOI designator.

NOTE ON GLOBAL MOORINGS: Some global moorings have multiple CT instruments deployed on the same node, which can lead to confusion when attempting to identify the nominal deployment depth. You will need to use the last few digits of the instrument reference designator to help identify the location of the CT.

To identify data of interest, it is recommended that you review OOI array and instrument nomenclature (https://oceanobservatories.org/research-arrays/). To identify matchups with other OOI instruments, users should pay special attention the node and instrument reference designators. Generally, the first 2 or 3 characters of the node can be used to match up instruments. This does not work for Global deployments with instrument arrays across depths deployed on the same node. In these instances, the last few characters of the instrument should be used to match up with the appropriate depth and other co-located instruments.

WARNING: These datasets are intended to simplify access to a full deployment's worth of conductivity and temperature data. No advanced reprocessing has been performed and I haven't looked at all of these datasets in detail. In instances where latitude and longitude were missing from the dataset, a latitude/longitude representing the approximate center of the array was used in GSW calculations. Depth has not been calculated and data have not been organized into profiles. Note that data may still contain spikes or trends not captured by QARTOD test results or annotations. For questions, issues, or if something looks odd, please email Ian Black (blackia@oregonstate.edu).

Processing Steps

  1. Data from all telemetry sources for a deployment are merged and duplicate entries are removed.
  2. Data with QARTOD primary flags indicating failure (flag=4) are removed.
  3. Data with human-in-the-loop annotations indicating failure (flag='fail') are removed.
  4. Practical salinity, density, and potential density are then recomputed.
  5. Data are then repackaged in a single file per deployment.

sea_water_electrical_conductivity

Seawater conductivity refers to the ability of seawater to conduct electricity. The presence of ions in the seawater, such as salt, increases the electrical conducting ability of seawater. As such, conductivity can be used as a proxy for determining the quantity of salt in a sample of seawater.

Original Data Access

The best method for accessing the original OOI data files is through the OOI GoldCopy THREDDS Data Server.

The OOI JupyterHub was used to create this curated dataset. This resource is free to use and supports data access through Python, R, Julia, and MATLAB. Users are encouraged to use this resource for analysis of this curated dataset.
