Description

INDEX VILLARIS: or, An Alphabetical Table of all the cities, market-towns, parishes, villages, and private seats in England and Wales was first published by John Adams in 1680. This dataset is a transcription of all 24,000 entries in Index Villaris: each title as printed, Adams's county and hundred as spelled, his latitude and longitude, and the symbols by which he classified each place. Beside the transcript, an editorial layer gives our best identification of the place each entry means: its historic county (with a Chapman code), the hundred meant (linked to Wikidata and to the Vision of Britain unit where one exists), a point, and links to CAMPOP Places, Wikidata and GB1900. Every city and market town is typed as such and linked to its CAMPOP Places identifier. The two layers are kept apart, and every editorial change since v2.0.4 is listed, with its basis, in corrections.csv.

The points are OpenStreetMap nodes chosen by hand for each place (© OpenStreetMap contributors, used as Geocoding Results under the OSMF Geocoding Guideline), or for corrected places the coordinates of their Wikidata item. A second set of coordinates applies a thin plate spline transformation to Adams's own figures. The data are available as CSV and as GeoJSON in the Linked Places Format.

The dataset can be viewed on an interactive map and as reconstituted county tables through the GitHub repository here.
