## About the dataset

This dataset is a community-curated inventory of Open Science monitoring initiatives, compiled by Working Group 2 of the Open Science Monitoring Initiative (OSMI). It gives a structured overview of initiatives that monitor the implementation, uptake and impact of Open Science, so that the people running or planning such initiatives, policymakers and researchers can compare them.

Version 2 contains **92 initiatives**. Each row is one monitoring initiative and is described in two parts:

1. **Descriptive fields (columns 1–17):** information about the initiative, entered by WG2 members and contributors and revised after public consultation.
2. **Analytical coding (columns 18–29):** five variables (V1–V5) coded from the descriptive fields according to the *OSMI WG2 Codebook v3*. They cover monitoring purpose, link to compliance, data source typology, named data sources and Open Science pillars monitored.

## Files

|File|Format|Description|
|-|-|-|
|`OSMI\_WG2\_OS\_Monitoring\_Initiatives\_coded\_v2.csv`|CSV, UTF-8, comma-separated|**Main data file: coded dataset.** 92 rows × 29 columns (descriptive fields and V1–V5 coding), one row per initiative, machine-readable column names.|
|`OSMI\_WG2\_OS\_Monitoring\_Initiatives\_coded\_v2.xlsx`|Excel|The same coded dataset, with the original column headings, for reading in a spreadsheet.|
|`OSMI\_WG2\_Codebook\_v3.pdf`|PDF|Codebook: definitions, values and decision rules for the coded variables V1–V5, plus the codebook change log.|
|`OSMI\_WG2\_data\_dictionary\_v2.csv`|CSV, UTF-8|One row per column of the data file: definition, data type, allowed values, separator for multi-value fields and how missing values are recorded.|
|`OSMI\_WG2\_codelists\_v2.csv`|CSV, UTF-8|Machine-readable list of every code and label used in V1–V5 (from the codebook).|
|`README.md`|Markdown|This file.|

The coded dataset includes all descriptive fields, so the uncoded dataset is not published separately in this version.

## Methods

### What counts as a monitoring initiative

An initiative was included if it meets the OSMI definition of an Open Science monitoring initiative. An Open Science monitoring initiative is defined as an initiative that:

* Publicly and regularly monitors and evaluates trends or impacts related to open science policies, mechanisms, interventions, and/or incentives;
* May use quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods approaches;
* Monitors the degree of openness of scientific processes and outputs such as publications, software, or research data, and ideally also covers other pillars of Open Science (e.g. citizen science, economic or societal impact), across multiple stages of the research cycle.

### Data collection

* **Identification of initiatives:** desk research by WG2 members between 2025 and 2026. In March 2026, WG2 opened a public consultation in which the Open Science community added more initiatives. After curation, this led to the publication of dataset Version 1.
* **Data entry:** WG2 members and contributors filled in a shared template. The `details\_added\_by` column records who entered each initiative.
* **Collection period:** 2025 to 2026
* **Update frequency:** this is a living dataset. WG2 continues to monitor the landscape and plans to publish updated versions approximately quarterly, adding new initiatives and updating existing entries.

### Analytical coding

Five variables were derived from the free-text fields according to the *OSMI WG2 Codebook v3* (included):

|ID|Variable|Columns|
|-|-|-|
|V1|Monitoring purpose archetype|`v1\_purpose\_primary`, `v1\_purpose\_secondary`, `v1\_notes`|
|V2|Compliance linkage strength|`v2\_compliance\_linkage`, `v2\_notes`|
|V3|Data source typology|`v3\_data\_source\_typology`, `v3\_proprietary\_flag`, `v3\_notes`|
|V4|Data source identification|`v4\_data\_sources`, `v4\_notes`|
|V5|Open Science pillars monitored|`v5\_pillars\_monitored`, `v5\_notes`|

* **Coding:** coded by Claude Opus 5.5 (Anthropic, large language model).

## Personal data

The `details\_added\_by` column credits the people who contributed entries, with their consent. One contributor chose to remain anonymous.

## Version history

|Version|Date|Changes|
|-|-|-|
|1|2026/06/26|First release with 90 initiatives, compiled through WG2 desk research and the March 2026 public consultation. Excel only.|
|2|2026/11/08|92 initiatives: 2 new initiatives added; 1 entry updated (Slovenian Open Science Monitor). Added analytical coding (V1–V5) with Codebook v3. Added a CSV version, data dictionary, code lists and this README. Cleaned and standardised descriptive fields.|
