Description

The geoscience RSE community consists of many RSEs working across a wide range of domains, spanning, among others, climate, weather, space science, geology and oceanography. Yet opportunities to connect across these areas remain limited. This Birds of a Feather session brings together RSEs working in or interested in geoscience to share technical insights, exchange career perspectives and strengthen a growing community.

The Geoscience SIG was formed following a very successful BoF session at RSECon 2024 and following a successful inaugural meeting at last year’s RSECon; this session forms the annual hybrid meeting of the Geoscience RSE Special Interest Group. It will showcase community highlights through short lightning talks and a keynote by Nick Jefferson (University of Leeds) on the development of the African nowcasting mobile phone app FASTA, alongside a panel discussion exploring the varied career pathways available to geoscience RSEs across academia, government institutes, and the private sector.

The session will also provide space for open discussion, allowing participants to identify shared challenges, opportunities for collaboration, and priorities for the SIG’s future activities. We will conclude with an update on SIG activities, upcoming SIG events, and ways for attendees to get involved, such as joining the wider committee.
